A heart attack or cardiac arrest can cost you your life or affect your quality of life. Here is what men need to know to prevent heart attacks and cardiac arrest.
Why Should I Worry About Heart Attacks and Cardiac Arrests?
You might think that a heart attack or cardiac arrest is a problem you only need to worry about once you get older. But, unfortunately, heart problems are all too common among younger men. After accidents (such as traffic accidents), heart disease is the leading cause of death among men aged 35 to 44. For men aged 45 to 54, it ranks first.
In reality, you are never too young to start thinking about these issues. The American Heart Association now recommends starting heart disease prevention as early as age 20.
In the long run, the risk of dying from heart disease is nearly one in three. So, why not try to put off that day for as long as possible?
What Are a Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest?
Undoubtedly, you have heard these terms thousands of times. But do you know the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest?
The reason of a heart attack (or myocardial infarction) is quite simple to understand. It is, essentially, a plumbing problem. The heart is a pump that circulates blood throughout the body. But, like any pump, it requires an energy supply to function—in this case, a flow of blood rich in oxygen and nutrients.
Sometimes, the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle become clogged due to the buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other harmful substances. If a blood clot suddenly blocks an already obstructed artery, the heart stops receiving the fuel it needs; its cells begin to suffer from deprivation and die, and the pump risks shutting down.
Cardiac arrest is different. While a heart attack is a sanitation problem, cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. Regular electrical impulses generate heartbeats. However, if these impulses become erratic, causing an irregular heart rhythm known as an arrhythmia, the pump may stop working. When you see heroic doctors on television shouting, “Clear!” as they deliver an electric shock to a patient with a flatlining ECG using defibrillator paddles, what they are treating is cardiac arrest. They are attempting to jump-start the heart with electrical stimulation to restore a normal rhythm. When it proves fatal, cardiac arrest is referred to as “sudden cardiac death.”
